Review your home objectively without emotion or sentimentality. Eliminate clutter. Ensure good, functional lighting. Your entry is your first impression of your home. Make sure it is spotless and with simple decorative pieces. Polish or replace locks and door knobs.
Crisp clean walls and base boards are a must. If a fresh coat of paint is the answer or if chips in the wall are visible, get it done. Remove all clutter. Clean blinds and steam clean carpets and floors. Position furniture to best serve the functionality of the room. Organize pantry and cupboards. Tame any odors that may be lingering.

A good first impression is a must. Your average person buying a home cannot see beyond other people's tastes and see what a great home is right in front of them, which could be what they have been looking for all along. So, they just need a little help to see it.
